What the professionals are saying:

I experienced the incredible healing potential of acupuncture following a car accident. Through the application of the needles to facilitate release I became aware that an old emotional injury was still active for me. I was able to clear this injury, to release the emotional trauma, in one profound session. Thank you, Kathleen.
- Rita Marsh, BSN, RN, HNC

The combination of talk therapy and acupuncture is very powerful. After my stroke I needed help in many areas in my life. Kathleen helped me make sense out of the chaos. Bringing up emotions in a confidential, safe environment and then being immediately treated with acupuncture is truly an holistic model of care for this millennium.
- Mary Margaret O'Gara, RN, BSN, CDE Director Diabetes Education Center, A VH

Both my wife and myself have been clients of Kathleen Menten over a period of several years. During that time I referred many patients to her for treatment with both Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology. Her treatments were effective. She is very professional, caring and capable.

Who is Kathleen?

Kathleen Menten is a board certified advanced practice nurse, acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist who has been practicing acupuncture since 1986 and nursing since 1969. She helped to create the Integrative Medicine Program at the cancer center at Johns Hopkins Hospital where she did acupuncture and was part of the pain team. Kathleen's passion is helping people to find meaning in their lives and to re-write their story when their current reality does not appeal to them. She is a die-hard eclectic, drawing from many traditions to help people. Her acupuncture style reflects this. It is a combination of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Five Element,  Scalp Acupuncture, Auricular Acupuncture and Muscle Activation Technique.

About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one component of Chinese Medicine, a holistic, energy based approach of healthcare that is over 2000 years old.  It includes a variety of procedures involving the stimulation of specific points on the surface of the body for the purpose of normalizing energetic functions within the body-mind. It also provides a catalyst for the body-mind’s own innate healing abilities. Acupuncture relieves pain, promotes relaxation and provides emotional balance.  This stimulation is achieved through the use of ultra thin needles, heat, electricity, or finger pressure.

Kathleen's Specialties

Pain, chronic illness, sides effects of cancer treatments from an East/West perspective and problems with the central nervous system (see scalp acupuncture).

Kathleen can help you navigate the complex world of Western medicine while treating you with Eastern Medicine.

How Kathleen can help you:

This combination of techniques allows for symptom management while the underlying balance is also being addressed.

It treats: pain, chronic illness, joint and muscle pains, headaches & migraines, female problems, emotional problems, digestive & respiratory problems,  spiritual issues, etc.

Scalp Acupuncture
Chinese scalp acupuncture is the most remarkable "new" acupuncture system. It was invented in china in the 1950's. Unlike Traditional Acupuncture it is neither based in the meridian system nor does it deal with QI (energy). Rather it is based on the Western location of various functional aspects of the brain. Acupuncture needles are placed in the scalp over each lobe of the brain. These needles seem to effect the underlying functions of the brain. Scalp acupuncture produces impressive, even miraculous results in any central nervous system problem. some examples of this are:

MS, paralysis, stroke, aphasia, Parkinson's, Complex Regional Pain syndrome, Phantom limb & residual limb pain, low back pain, fibromyalgia, restless leg syndrome and much more.

Kathleen uses only disposable needles. She may also choose to use electro-acupuncture.

Herbs constitute an important part of Kathleen's individualized treatment plan. The Chinese herbal system is the safest, most comprehensive and most respected herbal system in the world. Herbs work to relieve symptoms rather than suppress them. When properly used through the Chinese diagnostic system (prescribed by a practitioner) herbs are much safer than their Western counterparts. Plants contain natural buffers, so they are less likely to produce allergic responses than Western drugs. When used in conjunction with acupuncture they strengthen the results.

Mind-body approaches are used by Kathleen in her acupuncture practice to help with pain and stress control.

Kathleen is a board certified nurse counselor. She accepts individuals or couples for counseling for anxiety, depression stress reduction and marriage counseling.

Inside each person lies a wealth of knowledge, capabilities and power rarely transmitted to the conscious mind. Acupuncture provides a catalyst for developing these creative possibilities latent in each of us.
